I Posted on Instagram Every Day for a Month and Here’s What Happened

I received 365 Photo Challenges to Inspire Your Instagram Year for my birthday and I was very excited. Often I struggle to find inspiration for photos and with this book that is something that I won’t have to worry about for ages to come. So I decided to challenge myself to post on Instagram for one whole month. Every. Day. I posted on my personal and blog Instagram accounts.

I think we can all agree that the Instagram algorithm sucks. We know this. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much we can do about this. My hope was that by posting every day I would be able to increase engagement and hopefully get back to where I used to be.

After an entire month of posting every day I can safely say that it made no difference. I actually think that I got less likes. LESS! I engage daily on Instagram. I like and comment on so many photos. My photos are posted at different times of the day and still…nothing.

I currently have 1245 followers on my blog Instagram – mecupcakesandtea – and 627 followers on my personal account – kirstyhoggons. So I thought that I would put my finding into numbers to show you exactly how my engagement has dropped.

April 2017

Blog Account: 14 Instagram posts at an average of 113 likes

Personal Account: 13 Instagram posts at an average of 42 likes

April 2018

Blog Account: 30 Instagram posts at an average of 49 likes

Personal Account: 30 Instagram posts at an average of 24 likes

As you can see, my personal account (with half the amount of followers) got almost as many likes last year as my blog account did this year. I tried posting every day. I posted at different times. My engagement still sucks. I like/comment on so many people’s posts throughout the day and it still does not help.

I stupidly forgot to record how many followers I had at the beginning of April but I haven’t lost any and if I have then I have gained them back so my followers have remained quite steady. Obviously at this time last year I had fewer followers which just makes this so much worse. Fewer followers but way more engagement!

I am going to persevere because I do like using Instagram but does anyone else find it very upsetting when you work really hard and it seems like it is all for nothing?

Do you struggle with engagement on Instagram? How do you keep going? Also, if you know of any tips on how I can improve my engagement then please let me know because I could use all the help I can get!

Let me know in the comments below!

I completely agree and feel he frustration, I really did not want to correlate my blog to my instagram but approaching affiliates I learnt that the two go hand in hand, I have note yet created a separate account for my blog and simply unprivated my personal accounted then added my link, I will definitely create an account for my blog in the future but I am still feeling discouraged by it.

I only have two because the themes on them both are so different I felt I couldn’t join them haha! I just feel like it is so difficult to use it these days – it feels like no matter how much work you do it’s never enough x

I’ve been struggling as well, mostly because of the banned hashtags. I’m trying to post again, but I think engagement on mine is low because I didn’t post for over two months…

    Hi Kirsty,

Have you tried adding a widget to your blog to showcase your IG? I think it helps to convert people that regularly visit your blog to find you and follow you easily! I did this about a month ago, and got a lot many organic followers who are actually sticking around, instead of the usual follow and unfollow lot on IG. All the best!

Hi! thank you for your comment! I do have one but it is right at the bottom of my blog so I think that maybe people don’t see it? I think I should move it to the side – thank you!

Thanks for this insight- I struggle with the constant gaining and loosing of followers on here so nothing to add other than it is interesting to see it didnt make a difference πŸ™‚

It was so much work to post on two accounts every day so to find it didn’t make any difference made me sad but on the plus side I don’t feel I need to post every day (or almost) any more!

When I first started my Instagram a month ago and didn’t know what I was doing it was a personal account. A week later I switched to business and my engagement dropped to half. People also seem to follow you just so you’ll follow them back and then unfollow so while I’ve grown slowly it’s still growing. Tailwind has helped immensely. Try tailwind tribes (it’s free) I can give you a link if you’d like. Other than that I only ask for people who are truly interested to follow me and I get a larger percentage of engagement than most. Plus with tailwind I can schedule posts so my whole life isn’t centered around my social media planning.

Ah the people that follow just to unfollow are a bit annoying in my opinion. I just find that there really isn’t any point. I too prefer people to follow me if they actually like my content. I have Tailwind but so far I have only used it for Pinterest. I feel like maybe I am missing out on something here?! ‘m going to go and have a look at how I can use it for Instagram too!

I made the mistake of converting my personal Instagram to my blog account. I realize now that was a terrible idea because I have no idea how to track engagement with others verses my family and friends just supporting me. My blog is more lifestyle and parenting so it is somewhat related to my life. I have been following and commenting on hashtags that are related to my niche and have gained 100 new followers in 1.5 months. I only post a picture twice a week but I made sure the caption is very positive and uplifting. I have tons of follow/unfollows but have found when it’s a fellow Mom or someone that is actually relatable to my life I refollow them and make an effort to put an engaging comment on one of their pictures. It’s seems like I am making some new friends this way.

It is really great that you seem to have found something that works for you! I find my personal account has way more follow/unfollows! I also try and engage with people as much as possible. Thankfully there are some really supportive people out there who love helping others as well x

I related to this so much! I struggle with inspiration for posts so much. Maybe I need to do a similar challenge too. Thanks for the great post!

Hey Kirsty! I totally feel your frustration! I’ve worked with hundreds of bloggers and now a days is so hard to boost engagement and gain followers! Have you tried shoutouts for friends/blogger similar to you?

Thank you for your comment! I have not tried that yet but that does sound like a good idea! I think that I should definitely look into that! πŸ™‚
