Sometimes taking care of yourself can seem like the most difficult thing. When you have responsibilities, a job, a family to look after, or if you’re a student, looking after yourself can sometimes seem almost impossible. When you constantly put those other things first and leave yourself until last it might seem like a good thing but, it’s not. I get it. I put other people and other things before myself so I can relate. But the problem comes in when you give so much of yourself to others that there is no time left for you.
Yes, sometimes you have to work hard and there is not a lot of time to wind down. That is understandable. But working too hard with little to no rest can cause burnout. That is not fun. It can also create huge amounts of stress which affect your ability to actually do what you want to do properly.
When you spend the time to take care of yourself you can also recharge which means you can come back better and stronger than before. Taking care of yourself is important. You also cannot help others if you have not taken the time to care for yourself. I am not saying that you should book yourself into a spa every other weekend but there are other ways that you can look after yourself. Some of these are relatively simple, and others require a little bit more time:
- read a book
- colour in
- listen to music
- drink some tea
- go for a massage
- have your nails done
- join a club
- vent to a journal
- stay offline
- sit in a coffee shop and just watch the world go by
- work out
- take a trip to the mountains/outdoors
- dance like no one is watching
