Misconceptions about Bloggers

Being a blogger is wonderful. I love being able to write and take photographs and have it actually mean something. Blogging is not my job. I have a full time job and do blogging as a hobby. However, some people believe that blogging is just something easy to do to pass the time. Even though mine is only a hobby, I can still see that some people do not take it seriously. Here are some misconceptions about bloggers.

All your free time is spent at events

Let me tell you straight up that this is rubbish. Yes, some people get invited to loads of events but loads of us don’t. Also, even if there are events it does not always mean that you will get invited or can go for free. Some of them you need to pay for yourself.

Bloggers are braggers

Well yes, some bloggers might be. However if you are paid to promote a product, or are given free products in exchange for a review then you need to share that with people. It doesn’t make you a bragger. It means you are doing your job.

Bloggers lives are easy

Just because it might look like they spend all of their free time at launches, or travelling to far off places it does not mean that a bloggers life is easy. It just means that they only show you these parts of their lives and they don’t show you when they’re sitting on the couch writing and editing photos.

But everyone is a blogger these days

While it is true that there are a lot of bloggers out there, there are also a lot of doctors, lawyers, accountants – does that mean that you shouldn’t follow that path if that is your dream? How about we let anyone who wants to be a blogger be one?

It’s an easy job

No, it’s not. Blogging takes hours of hard work. you need to write and edit posts. You also need to take photos, edit those and upload them. It can honestly take hours to finish just one post. It is not an easy job.

It’s an easy way to make money

Some people think that you can just write a few words, slap a picture on it and make money. No, that’s not quite how it works. You need to work incredibly hard to be able to make money with your blog. It does not just happen.

You can’t make any money

This is on the flip side of the above point. Some people actually make quite a lot of money from blogging. For some people this is their full time job – as in they wake up every day and work on their blog instead of actually going into an office. You can definitely make money from it and it is certainly a real job.

You get loads of free things

It is true that some people get loads of free things. However, there are loads of people that don’t. Also, just because someone gets free things it does not mean that they are actually free. Most of the time you still need to write posts, or share your thoughts on the product.

Obviously I am not aiming this post at anyone in particular. I just wanted to share some of the misconceptions that people seem to have about bloggers.

If you are not a blogger then did you have any of these misconceptions about bloggers? If you are a blogger then are there any other misconceptions about bloggers that you want to share? Let me know in the comments below!

Love,

Love this post – think it really clears up the mystery around blogging and the common judgements a lot of people outside of the community have. It certainly takes a lot of hard work and commitment for any blog to get big and also to make an income from it, which I think a lot of people don’t realise. Thank you for writing this post! I hope people take something away from reading this and make realisations! x

A big YES to everything in this post! Writing blog posts and taking photos takes a lot of time if you want to do it well, and if you need to trade your time to get a product to review, then it certainly isn’t free! But if you love it, it’s worth having a blog!

Absolutely! It’s great to get products but if you’re doing something in return then it’s definitely not free! x

Love this post! It’s very accurate. I always get the “blogging is sooooo easy” when I spend HOURS writing, editing and then even promoting the post ….

Thank you! Exactly! Well if it’s so easy then I’m sure my friends wouldn’t mind doing some writing, editing, photograph taking for me…

The thing about bragging really annoys me! I get sent free things so of course I’m going to publicly announce it in a way that gets recognition for being blogger friendly. The same as I would if I paid for something and the company throws in a little bit extra, they didn’t have to do it but they did and it’s worth shouting about 🙂 great post!

Thank you! Of course! Being sent free things is great and bloggers work incredibly hard so I don’t see why we can’t share the rewards!

I absolutely agree with this post! everything is so so true! Blogging is not easy nor an easy life. It takes so much time and motivation. And if you’re successful at something, you’re allowed to brag, you deserved it! xx corinne
