Why I’d Swipe Left on You: Part 1

Ah, online dating. What a wild ride. But how else do people meet other people? Don’t give me the malarkey that you meet people when you actually bother leaving your apartment. I am a social butterfly these days and I have still not met anyone out and about. So my love life has now been reduced to a profile on a screen with a few lines of information and perfectly curated photos.

However, lately there have been slim pickings in the online dating world. Are all the good guys taken and I’ve been left with the dregs? Not to sound harsh but I can’t seem to find any guys that are looking for what I’m looking for. It surely cannot be this difficult. In honour of Valentine’s Day, which is fast approaching, today I am sharing what makes me swipe left on people.

I am looking for a husband. I don’t have time to be messing around with people who aren’t sure of what they want. So if your bio says that you’re looking for ‘something casual’ or ‘not sure yet’ then I just cannot swipe right. I know what I want and if you’re not looking for something serious, or if you don’t know what you want then I already know the chances of us being a match are not very high. Similarly, if your bio doesn’t say what you want at all, that’s also cause for concern.

I definitely want to have children. For me, that’s not even negotiable. If you aren’t interested in having children then that’s an immediate no. What is the point of even potentially starting something when it’s obviously not going to go anywhere? Just like I don’t plan on changing my mind, I cannot hope that a guy might change his – that doesn’t really seem fair.

My faith is really important to me but I also know that there are many good guys out there that might not share the same faith and beliefs as me. While this is not a deal breaker, a guy does need to be respectful of my beliefs. If someone is completely against even being respectful about them then it’s a no-no.

If you don’t have any information about yourself then I’m going to have to pass. That is literally just basing things on the way that you look – there are more important things. At least fill in the interests section. It takes 5 minutes and at least gives people something to work with. Also, writing “Ask and I’ll tell” is a no. I want to know something about you before I make my decision.

If you only have one photo, especially if you don’t have any information, that’s risky as well. While looks aren’t the most important thing, surely you can find more than one photo of yourself?

There are key words that guys sometimes have in their bios that also put me off immediately. Now, if I had to actually write all of them here then I would definitely be unpopular. Freedom of speech and differing opinions are not always accepted. However, I will share some of them:

– 420 friendly (Not for me, thanks.)

– open minded as an interest (Look, I can have an open mind about some things but honestly, probably not in this context.)

– backpacking (Hear me out, I am not big on backpacking – if it’s the real thing. If it is just an interest of theirs then maybe I could deal with it. However, if it makes up most of their bio – hard pass. It’s not something that I plan on taking up.)

– extreme sports (I love sports and I’m happy to watch them. Heck, I’m even happy to exercise. Hiking? Every now and then, sure. However, I am not spending every week hiking or doing some kind of sporty activity. Unless it’s watching sport at a stadium – then sign me up!)

– only made up quotes (You know when a guy has a crazy quote about himself that was ‘said’ by some celebrity? That really doesn’t tell me much about you except for the fact that you couldn’t think of anything else to tell me.

I do realise that this is a substantial list but I also know what I’m looking for. While dating apps might work, they are also absolutely exhausting. Somebody just find a husband for me, please, so that dating apps and I can go our separate ways.
