Making good friendships as an adult is difficult. Anyone who says it isn’t is lying – or they’re just way better at it than I am. I’ve never been good at making friends. When I was younger I had a decent amount of friends but life happens and now most of us aren’t in contact anymore. So, yeah, making new friendships as an adult? Tough.
I used to think I needed a lot of friends to be happy, but now I realise that’s not true. I hate having the surface level conversations that come with meeting new people. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to know how your day was or that you took your dog for a walk yesterday. I want to know about your life and your inner most thoughts, not that you had spaghetti last night for dinner.
Having a small group of good friends that you can talk to about anything with no judgement – that’s what’s important. Thankfully I have found some really good ones and for that I’m grateful. Having few friends has benefits that I didn’t always see.
Shout-out to the people that made living and working in Poland so much better. Without them I wouldn’t have survived! They definitely helped me to get through some really tough times and I definitely made some lifelong friendships.
I used to think that having few friends meant that I was missing out, and maybe I am, but I also cherish true friendships over loads of superficial ones. Don’t get me wrong, I still have room in my circle for some new friendships, but trying to make them? Really difficult. I definitely need more friends in my home town though, so I guess if you live here then let me know?
If anyone has tips for making friends as an adult, let me know!
I can relate to this article. Loads.
Well done, you.
Brave for writing about it, braver for hitting “publish”.
Thank you, Maria! I think I’m finally brave enough to blog what I feel instead of worrying about how others will perceive me!
