Last week I shared my top 5 books of last year and I mentioned that it was tough to choose the top books because I’d read some really poor ones. Today I share some of those with you. Now, these reviews are my own and I appreciate that everyone has different preferences when it comes to reading. These books just didn’t do it for me. I rated them all 2 stars on Goodreads – and there were other 2 star books as well that I couldn’t put on the list.
How to Keep A Husband for 10 Days – Jessica Hatch
This book took forever to get started and honestly I don’t feel like it ever really did. I was 10% in and I felt like nothing had happened. The blurb sounded good, as did the title, so I thought I’d love it. I was wrong. Basically there is a married couple in the middle of a divorce and they have to pretend to still be happily married to work on a project for a friend. They only really get started on this project around 40% in to the book. Honestly by that point my interest had been lost.
Bluebell Season At the Potting Shed – Jenny Kane
The cover, title and description all scream something that I would ordinarily love reading. Unfortunately this lacked something for me. The main character, Maddie, was a negative Nancy and quite honestly exhausting. Negativity is fine – sometimes. But when that’s the main personality trait of a character it’s too much. Special mention to Ed who really was a wonderful character and far too patient with her. Jo’s storyline seemed an after thought and not everything seemed necessary. Honestly it just made the book longer than necessary.
His Curvy Friend – Mary E. Thompson
I don’t know why I chose this book because titles like this actually get to me. However in this case, it seemed somewhat unnecessary. Even in the blurb nothing is mentioned about her being curvy – which the title implies. So I feel like it wasn’t a big enough part of the story to actually make the title. This book was fine but there was something lacking. Books like this can get frustrating sometimes but also, it’s a genre I’ll keep reading!
Killer Cupcakes – Leighton Dobbs
Does anyone else get annoyed at books where the main character likes to play detective? I don’t know what it is, but it really frustrates me. And there are never any consequences for playing detective, even if it actually interferes with something. To be honest, the main reason I rated this book so low was for this reason. Overall it wasn’t bad, and it does have many mentions about cupcakes so it can’t be all bad.
Condos and Corpses – Angela K. Ryan
This book was fine but it lacked something. It took me a while to read and I struggled to get through it. Also, more people playing detective, but slightly more dangerously than the previous book. Also, Connie has been given an amazing condo and her first thought is to sell it – girl, you’re crazy. However, there are some twists in this book which might redeem it for some.
So far in 2023, I have read some decent books so I’m hoping that when it comes time to write this post next year I’ll struggle to find any to put on the list!
